Sunday 1 October: Celebrate World Quaker Day with The BlackQuaker Project

World Quaker Day Presentation

From Hal Weaver and The BlackQuaker Project

With Honored Guest Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge

Sunday, 1 October 2023 - 1-2 pm Eastern Daylight Time (EDT)

Held over Zoom Webinar

Dear F/friends,

We invite you to attend a virtual presentation from Hal Weaver and the BlackQuaker Project (BQP) of Wellesley Friends Meeting, with special guest Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge, on Sunday, 1 October 2023, at 1-2 pm EDT. To celebrate World Quaker Day, this program will showcase recent developments in the BQP’s mission to give voice to Quakers of color around the globe, who comprise an overwhelming majority of the world's Friends, but historically have not been given their due in leadership and concerns. This event is co-sponsored by the Quaker Action for Racial Equality and the Quaker and Wider World Connections Clusters of Wellesley Friends Meeting.

We are thrilled to be joined by the director of the Quaker United Nations Office in Geneva, Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge, who has pursued equity and justice for decades as a leader in South Africa’s anti-apartheid movement, as South Africa’s ANC deputy minister of Defense, and later Health, and now as the first person of African descent to lead a transnational Quaker organization. Friend Nozizwe was an early champion of our ministry’s 2020 Pendle Hill pamphlet, Race, Systemic Violence, and Retrospective Justice: An African American Quaker Scholar-Activist Challenges Conventional Narratives, and even incorporated the BQP’s proposed plan for retrospective justice/reparations into her agenda as QUNO-Geneva Director. We will spotlight our collaborative efforts to address historical and current injustices, which we hope you will find both provocative and evocative.

How to join our World Quaker Day Webinar

You will be able to enter the Zoom webinar at 12:30 pm EDT on Sunday, 1 October. Those who join early will be treated at 12:45 pm EDT to a 15-minute prelude of sacred Black and Latinx songs taken from the repertoire of music to be sung at the August 2024 FWCC World Plenary Conference in South Africa, of which Dr. Weaver was part of the music-selection team. Formal programming will then begin precisely at 1 pm EDT.
